enough – poem

My heart aches
I love you
and yet
how can you be
the person I married?
We watched relationships fail
because life was not
what they expected
or planned.
Too tough.
Too difficult.
Too expensive.
Too controlled.
Too selfish.
I wonder if
you feel that itch,
that niggling notion
repeating itself
over and over
“Why does it always have to be so hard?”
Perhaps I’ve made it so.
I stand by my vows
wondering if it’s enough,
if I’m enough,
if we’ll ever be enough
for you.
I wonder if these two hands,
these two lips,
this lonely heart,
can make it right.
