inevitable – a poem

Side Note:

I’m taking part in the 2014 PAD challenge, which means this is a break in what I usually post. Today’s Poem is to:

For today’s prompt, write an inevitable poem. The poem that always had to be, or a poem about something that was inevitable. Maybe two people getting together was inevitable, or maybe two people splitting up was inevitable. But there are so many things that seem inevitable with hindsight.

Instead of writing for NaNoWriMo, I’ve decided to make these poems inspired by the second draft of my work-in-progress, currently titled “Arch Villains”. It will also be posted in the PAD Challenge post.

inevitable

In this moment
I stare down my enemy.
Confronted with a choice,
do the work they propose,
or else, no safeguards,
no negotiations beyond
salary, I admit
the life I made
has consequences
I didn’t foresee.
No matter how much
anticipation,
preparation,
planning
l undertook,
it was inevitable
in this moment
l stare down my enemy.
